Summit’s Mathematics Consultant Wins Prestigious Award

Summit’s mathematics consultant, Dr. Honi Bamberger is the recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award for her role as professor of Mathematics in The Jess and Midred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics at Towson University. Her excellence in the classroom is supported by any measure you can think of. The student evaluations range from 4.7 to 5 on a 5 point scale, with some classes reporting 100% fives. The peer evaluations are superb and include comments such as: “I was impressed with the mixture of theory with hands-on activities. These activities clearly reinforced the theory.” and “Great teaching along with high standards and expectations.” And the irrefutable source – Rate My Professor – backs up these observations with an overall quality rating of 4.7 along with an easiness rating of only 3. Common among comments at this website are “The best teacher I have ever had.”, “Really cares about how you do. It’s a demanding and difficult class”, and “I specifically chose this teacher.” We are truly honored to have Honi work as a consultant to Summit so that our math teachers can continue to improve their teaching methodologies.

Summit Students Raise Money for Haiti Relief

Students at The Summit School have been busy raising money for Haiti. Their fundraiser was entitled “Houses for Haiti”. A “House” at Summit refers to a group to which each student is assigned. The “Houses” are named after the world’s tallest mountain peaks (i.e. Everest, Kilimanjaro) and they engage in friendly competition throughout the year and participate in various community projects.
Each “house” competed to collect the most donations for Haiti and the funds were put into their “house piggy banks”. The students were encouraged to earn extra allowance at home by doing additional chores and also collected funds from family members and neighbors. In addition, the students sold rubber bracelets for $2 each and held a dress down day and paid $1 to dress out of uniform and wear red, white and blue, the colors of the Haitian flag. The “Houses for Haiti” relief project raised a total of $2763.19.
Proceeds from the students’ efforts will be donated to a hospital in Petionville, Haiti and Life Connection Mission, a non-profit organization serving the people of Montrouis, Haiti.
