Summer 2010: Reading Comprehension for Students with Specific Learning Disabilities: This course will expose students to the theoretical foundations and applications of reading comprehension with discussions from the perspectives of linguistic parameters, cognitive information processing, memory and learning, and motivation. Specific/research foundations and applications will be covered for vocabulary development, reading comprehension strategies, fluency and working memory. Participants will learn the causes of reading comprehension difficulties, and will be able to interpret diagnostic and informal test results. They will use this insight to plan instructional strategies across the curriculum for students with specific learning disabilities. Participants will earn 3 college credits through Anne Arundel Community College. Tuition cost is $825. A discount of $100 per person will be given for five or more enrolled from the same organization ($725 per person). Phono-Graphix® is a unique reading program that is straightforward and sensible, based on the sounds and symbols of the English language. The course is taught by a certified Phono-Graphix® trainer and will detail the concepts and skills necessary for unlocking the code of written English through context and active discovery. Upon completion of the 32-hour course and online exam, participants will be certified in the Phono-Graphix® reading method. Tuition is $800 payable to The Summit School, plus an additional $395 materials fee. Instructions for purchasing materials will be provided upon registration. Early registration is encouraged in order to receive materials before class begins.
