Dear Parents, As you know, research demonstrates that independent reading is essential to build reading skills and vocabulary knowledge. In keeping with this research, students entering I/T through T-1 participate in a summer reading program each year. This year, rising I/T through T-2 students will be expected to read three books during the summer break. The first book is required for everyone in the class. Students may choose to read the book or listen to it on tape or CD. All of the required books are available in an audio version. Each required book is accompanied by a written project. This project will be collected and graded by LA teachers in the fall. In addition, these books will be incorporated into instruction during the first weeks of school next year. The remaining books are to be selected by the students. The only requirement for these books is that they be at an appropriate reading level for the child. Please help your child to select books that they will enjoy. We are including some lists of books that you may want to consider, but these are just suggestions. Students should record the books they read on the Reading Record sheet in this packet. They are not required to complete a project on their choice books, but they are expected to read two books in addition to the required book. Of course, students are wholeheartedly encouraged to go above and beyond this minimum requirement. Please take a few minutes to look over your child’s summer reading packet. If you have any questions, feel free to contact your child’s LA teacher or Mrs. Shea. As always, thank you for your trust and support.
