The Student Government Program is a strong component of our school community. Initiated in our first year of operation, our Student Government Association (SGA) received the Maryland Association of Student Council's Felix Simon Award for Leadership and Service. Our advisors truly advise; they do not "do" the work. Our goal has always been to teach our students how to lead, promote their ideas, access community resources, advocate for themselves and present their points of view.

All teachers and students attend Summit's monthly Friday assemblies. Student successes are acknowledged. Birthdays are celebrated; projects, multimedia reports, experiments, plays, and songs are shared. "Pats on the Back" and achievements in our Hoofprints reading program are acknowledged. Our SGA officers "run the show". School spirit abounds.

SGA is involved in numerous community outreach projects throughout the year that support the efforts of other non-profit organizations. These activities include “Holiday Sharing”, a project where our students make the holidays special for families in need, and “Jump Rope for Heart” an event that raises money for the American Heart Association. In giving to the community and through volunteer work, our students begin to see that they are not alone in experiencing life's problems; they witness first hand the challenges others face and discover ways to help.

SGA members also participate in regional, state, and - most recently - national SGA conventions. Our SGA works closely with other schools to help develop their student council programs. Our student leaders demonstrate school spirit, leadership, and exemplary service.
