Edgewater, MD (May 2019) – Read Naturally is a research-proven intervention designed to help improve reading proficiency. Read Naturally announced the winners of its 2019 Read Live School of the Year Award recognizing schools whose students have substantially improved their reading skills using the Read Live program. Summit was recognized as this year’s School of the Year Runner Up. Each winner demonstrated:
Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy, Executive Director of The Summit School, explains that many students who attend The Summit School come with the diagnosis of dyslexia and other learning differences. These are bright children, who learn differently, many of whom have not been successful in traditional classroom settings. They come to The Summit School to build their academic skills and self-confidence and then go on to be successful in high school, college and beyond. Dr. McCarthy said, “Summit has tried a number of methodologies to improve our students’ reading fluency and application of phonics skills to text. Read Naturally augments The Summit School’s very systematic, explicit instruction of phonics. It helps students put knowledge into practice. I’m convinced we should use Read Naturally to help with fluency.”
The Summit School has been using Read Naturally programs since 2010 and began using Read Naturally Live in 2017. Read Naturally Live is a web-based, interactive version of the Read Naturally product. Students, teachers and parents are all requesting to use Read Naturally Live, especially after an informal Summit School study conducted during the school year. The study showed students using Read Naturally Live had remarkable growth rates in oral fluency and vocabulary, so remarkable that the program was immediately extended to all Summit students.
